Bisphenol-A in Plastics
Bisphenol-A (BPA) is found in some recycle number 7 products, but not in any other recycle number. BPA is in polycarbonate plastics which are labeled as recycle number 7. Recycle number 7 is a catch all recycle number. It is the number that is used when a plastic does not fit in any of the other recycle number definitions. So, number 7 products could be made from polycarbonate or some other plastic or even a combination of plastics. Number 7 plastics are not recyclable.
When purchasing a product with the number 7 recycle number, check to see if it says it is BPA free. BPA has been found to cause cancer, diabetes, obesity and hormonal issues. Fortunately BPA does not accumulate in your body permanently. If you eliminate your exposure to BPA eventually it will be flushed from your body. BPA leaches from the plastic into the food and drink that you consume. Studies have shown that about 93 percent of people have BPA in their system.
In time, products you use will become BPA free because the plastic will eventually gas out. It has been found that the highest concentrations of BPA gas out of the plastic when exposed to high heat like hot drinks and microwaving foods in plastic containers.
Just to mention some products that may contain BPA are food and drink packages such as three and five gallon reusable water bottles and some citrus juice bottles, baby bottles, toddler sippy cups and plastic disposable tableware. Steel food cans are lined with an epoxy resin which contains BPA (except the cans that contain Organic food products), bottle tops and some PVC products like plastic water supply pipes are just a few products.
Many manufacturers are now voluntarily making their products BPA free. Some of these products are made with a relatively new plastic called Tritan copolyester which is BPA free and still rated as a recycle number 7.
