How to Make Nut Milk

This is how to make raw almond or cashew nut milk.

Put 1 cup of raw nuts in a bowl and cover with water so there is about 1 inch of water over the top of the nuts. Soak over nigh or about 6-8 hours.

Pour the nuts and water through a Pure Joy Nut Milk Bag or a Hemp Bag to drain the water off. Then run water though the bag to rinse the nuts.

Add the nuts to a blender along with 1 1/2 cups of water to a blender. Blend until the nuts are completely pureed. You can add at this time 2 - 3 dates if you wish sweeten your nut milk with dates. A Blendtec or Vitamix blender is ideal for making nut milks. These blenders have the power to bread the nuts down into extremely fine particles, producing a creamier milk. But any blender will still do the job.

Add another 1 1/2 cups of water to the blender and blend briefly to blend the mixture together.

Drape the Pure Joy Nut Milk Bag or Hemp Bag over a container that holds 4 cups.

Pour the nut milk liquid into the nut milk bag. Pull the draw string closed and hold the bag by the top at the draw string. Hold the bag above the collection container. Gently slice your hand down the nut bag and squeeze the contents, gently working the liquid out of the solids. The liquid will flow from a Pure Joy Nut Milk Bag easier than a Hemp Bag.

You do not want to squeeze the bag real hard. You will be forcing the solids through the bag and you will not get as smooth of milk as desired.

If you did not add dates when you put the nuts in the blender to sweeten your nut milk, you can add about 1 -2 teaspoons of agave nectar, honey or sweetener of your choice to the milk now. You can also add a teaspoon of vanilla if desired to your finished nut milk.

The nut pulp can be frozen for up to a year or kept in the refrigerator for a few days and be used in many recipes. You can dehydrate the nut pulp and make nut flour with it. Or you can add it you your compost.

After removing the pulp from the nut milk bag, turn the bag inside out and rinse well under running water. You can put both your Pure Joy Nut Milk Bag and Hemp Bag in the washer, but it is recommended line dry them. The Hemp Bag can shrink a little in the dryer. the Pure Joy Nut Milk Bag dries very quickly when line dried or left to dry on a clean towel.
