Food Preparation Instructions

Sprouted flax seeds will add a slight spicy flavor to any sandwiches or salad you like. To sprout flax seeds, spread the seeds on a growing medium evenly, trying to leave a small bit of space between each seed. Dont worry if some of them are touching each other.

Some good growing mediums are the Back to Basics Wheatgrass Growing Kit which comes with four 10 X 20 Plastic Growing Trays, Peat Moss and Vermiculite for a sterile growing medium or the EasyGreen Sprouter which will spray water over the seeds for you and has a timer you can set to control the intervals the seeds get watered. With the EasyGreen Sprouter you should place a couple layers of paper towel on the bottom of the trays so the seeds can get a foot hold while growing. Flax seeds become very slippery when they get wet. Take a few seeds and soak them in a small amount of water for a few minutes, then try picking them up with your fingers. They will be slimy and hard to pick up.

Now for the occasional small batch of sprouted flax seeds, you can place about 1 to 2 teaspoons of seeds on a couple layers of paper towels or cheese cloth on your sprouting device mentioned above. You can use about 1/2 cup of seeds in the Back to Basics Wheatgrass Growing Kit and the EasyGreen Sprouter. Or you can spread enough dry seeds on the bottom of the empty tray you wish to use. Leave about 1/8 inch of space between each seed. Then pour those seeds into a measuring cup to see how much you have. Then you will know what fits in our sprouter for the future.

Moisten the growing medium, disburse the dry seeds on the growing medium and place in a low light room. You can cover the seeds with something like a towel to dim the light. Just make sure the cover does not touch the seeds. Keep the seed moist. You do not want them sitting in water. Be sure not to spray them hard with water when they are growing, you do not want the small plants to get knock over. You really only want the root or base of the tiny plants to get wet.

When the seeds begin to loose the seed hulls it is time to uncover them and put them in a well lit room. They can even take sunlight, but you may have to water them more often if they receive bright sunlight.

They are ready to harvest when they have opened a couple of leaves and those leaves are green. To harvest then, just cut them off at the base of the plant, just above the growing medium. The cut and unused sprouts can be stored in a plastic bag and placed in the refrigerator for a few days.
